What beam angle planning determines

  • Vertical tree uplighting angles to showcase canopy structure without spill

How we design focal point lighting

  1. Identify primary and secondary focal points

    Every well-lit property has a clear visual hierarchy. We identify the one or two elements that should draw the eye immediately — a signature tree, an entry gate, a water feature — and design beam angles around anchoring those first.

  2. Match beam spread to target width

    A 12-inch-diameter sabal palm trunk needs a different spread than a 20-foot-wide live oak canopy. We calculate target width at mounting distance to select the beam angle that fills the target without significant spill onto surrounding surfaces.

  3. Verify at dusk with test fixtures

    For larger projects, we bring test fixtures to confirm beam selections on-site before finalizing the spec. What works on paper occasionally needs a one-step narrower or wider beam when seen against the actual tree or wall.

Central Florida considerations

Central Florida's iconic royal palms, sabal palms, and live oaks each require different beam strategies. Royal palms benefit from tight 10–15° spots aimed up the trunk to emphasize their vertical line. Live oaks with wide spreading canopies typically need 40–60° floods placed further back to avoid hot-spot crowns. Florida's fast-growing plant palette also means beam angles chosen at planting may need adjustment within two to three growing seasons as plants fill in and change the spread geometry.

Common questions

What beam angle is best for uplighting a tree?

It depends on the tree. Narrow columnar palms typically need 10–15° spots. Compact ornamental trees with a defined crown do well at 25–35°. Wide canopy trees like live oaks usually need 45–60° floods placed well back from the trunk. Using a spot on a wide canopy tree creates a cone of light that illuminates the trunk but leaves the canopy dark.

How do I prevent beam light from hitting my neighbor's yard?

Proper fixture positioning, shielding, and aim angle control spill. Fixtures aimed more steeply (closer to vertical) reduce horizontal spill significantly. Many fixtures also accept glare shields or barn doors that cut beam spread on one side. We flag spill risk at the design stage so shielding is built into the spec rather than added as a fix afterward.

Can one fixture serve multiple focal points?

Rarely well. Fixtures aimed to cover two targets almost always compromise both. A wide flood aimed between two trees often fails to properly illuminate either. We typically spec dedicated fixtures per focal point and absorb the additional fixture cost into a design that actually delivers the intended effect.
