What Hotspotting Looks Like

Hotspotting occurs when a fixture with too narrow a beam angle is placed too close to its subject, creating a small intense circle of light rather than an even wash. The center of the beam is dramatically brighter than the edges, and the subject appears unevenly lit — almost burned-out in the middle and dim at the perimeter.

Uneven distribution more broadly describes any system where some areas are bright and adjacent areas are noticeably dark — usually the result of inconsistent fixture spacing, voltage drop on long wire runs, or mismatched lumen output between fixture types.

Hotspotting worsens as plants grow. A tree uplight with the right beam angle when the tree was young may hotspot badly once the trunk is 3 inches larger in diameter and the canopy has filled in. Voltage drop compounds when additional fixtures are added to a wire run without recalculating transformer tap settings. And DIY systems installed without voltage testing often have chronic dim-end problems from the first day.

How do I know if my dim fixtures are a voltage problem or a failing LED?
Voltage drop causes all far-end fixtures on a run to dim uniformly. A single fixture that's dimmer than its neighbors is more likely a failing driver or damaged LED module. We can distinguish the two in minutes with a voltage meter during a service call.
What beam angle should uplights use?
For most trees and shrubs, 36°–60° beam angles produce an even wash at typical mounting distances (3–6 feet from the plant base). Narrow 15°–24° beams are appropriate only for targeting very specific architectural details at longer distances. Using a narrow beam close to a subject always creates hotspotting.
Can hotspotting be fixed without replacing fixtures?
Sometimes. Re-aiming to use the beam edge rather than the center can reduce the hot-center effect. Diffuser lenses installed over existing fixtures soften the beam pattern. But if the beam angle is fundamentally wrong for the application, fixture replacement is the proper fix.
Will hotspotting get worse as my plants grow?
