Why proper wire burial matters

How wire trenching and burial is performed
- Plan cable routes to minimize conflicts
Cable routes are planned to run along bed edges and under mulch where possible, reducing the length of runs through turf that must be trenched. Routes are kept parallel to existing irrigation lines rather than crossing them at angles, which reduces future conflict risk and simplifies system documentation.
- Trench to 6-inch depth through turf areas
A narrow trenching tool or flat-edged spade cuts a vertical slot to 6 inches deep through turf. Cable is laid in the trench with minimal bending at fixture locations to prevent stress on the jacket. In mulched beds, cable is simply buried under the mulch layer without trenching.
- Make waterproof connections at fixture locations
All fixture-to-cable connections are made before the trench is closed. Each connection uses a gel-filled waterproof connector installed and tested before burial. This avoids the need to reopen buried sections for connection repairs.
- Close trench and restore turf
The turf slot is closed by pressing the soil back together and tamping the surface level. Irrigation is run to help roots re-establish. Most lawn areas show full recovery within 2–3 weeks with no visible evidence of trenching. A cable routing diagram is provided documenting buried run locations.
Central Florida's sandy soil makes trenching significantly easier than in clay or rocky soils — a narrow slot trench to 6 inches can typically be cut and closed in a fraction of the time it takes in heavier soils. The same sandy composition means cables buried at 4–6 inches are adequately protected from routine surface operations. In Central Florida's active maintenance environment — where weekly lawn service, bi-weekly irrigation checks, and annual landscape renovations are the norm — the question is not whether buried cable is worth the extra installation effort. It is whether any above-grade cable will survive more than one or two seasons.
Common questions
How deep does landscape lighting wire need to be buried?
The NEC and most landscape lighting manufacturers specify 6 inches as the minimum burial depth for low-voltage landscape lighting cable in residential applications. This depth provides adequate protection from string trimmer blades, which typically reach 2–3 inches below grade on hard cuts, and from irrigation heads, which are typically set at 3–4 inches. Cable buried at 4 inches is marginally protected; at 6 inches it is reliably protected from routine operations.
Can existing above-grade cable be buried without replacing it?
Yes, if the cable jacket is intact and undamaged. Before burial, the full cable run is inspected for cracking, UV damage, or cuts. Sections with compromised insulation are replaced before burial — burying damaged cable traps the fault and makes future repairs more difficult. Undamaged cable can typically be buried in place along its existing route.
