What Is Directional Spotlighting?
Directional spotlighting places a narrow-beam fixture (typically 15°–24°) at a distance from its subject and aims all of the light output at a single element — a specimen tree trunk, a sculpture, a fountain, an architectural feature. The narrow beam produces high intensity at the focal point with minimal spill onto surroundings, creating stark contrast between subject and background.
It's the opposite approach from flood or wash lighting. Where floods cover broad areas evenly, spotlighting creates hierarchy — declaring that this element is what the eye should go to first.
