What Is Directional Spotlighting?

Directional spotlighting places a narrow-beam fixture (typically 15°–24°) at a distance from its subject and aims all of the light output at a single element — a specimen tree trunk, a sculpture, a fountain, an architectural feature. The narrow beam produces high intensity at the focal point with minimal spill onto surroundings, creating stark contrast between subject and background.

It's the opposite approach from flood or wash lighting. Where floods cover broad areas evenly, spotlighting creates hierarchy — declaring that this element is what the eye should go to first.

  • Specimen trees with interesting trunk structure or silhouette
  • Sculptures, urns, or garden art in focal point positions
  • Architectural features seen from a distance (entries, towers, peaks)

When does spotlighting work better than a wide wash?
Spotlighting works best when the subject has strong vertical form and you want it to stand out dramatically against a dark background — a tall palm trunk, a sculpture, or an architectural tower. Wide wash lighting is better when you need even coverage across a broad surface like a hedge wall or a wide facade. Most complete designs use both.
How is spotlighting different from uplighting?
Uplighting is a direction (upward) not a beam width. You can uplight with a wide wash or a tight spot. Directional spotlighting specifically refers to using a narrow beam for precise coverage — it's often applied as an uplight but can be aimed horizontally or even downward at a subject.
How far from the subject should the fixture be placed?
Distance depends on beam angle and subject size. A 15° beam at 6 feet illuminates roughly an 18-inch circle; at 12 feet it covers about 3 feet. We calculate placement specifically for each subject rather than using a rule of thumb — the goal is the beam width matching the subject width at its most important point.
Does spotlighting work on plants that change with the seasons?
Somewhat. Florida's evergreen plant palette means most specimen plants hold their form year-round. Deciduous plants that lose leaves will look different under a spot in winter, but most Central Florida specimen plants are tropical and evergreen.
