Landscape Lights Not Turning On

Common causes of landscape lights not turning on
- Tripped GFCI outlet or internal transformer circuit breaker
- Failed transformer — no output voltage on any terminal
- Photocell malfunction causing the system to think it is daytime
- Incorrect timer programming — on/off schedule not set correctly after a power outage
- Severed cable from lawn equipment, aeration, or landscaping work
- Corroded or completely failed splice connection breaking the circuit
How to diagnose lights that will not turn on
- Check the GFCI outlet and transformer breaker
Press the reset button on the GFCI outlet supplying the transformer. If it has tripped, reset and monitor. Check the transformer's internal circuit breaker — most transformers have a reset button on the housing. A breaker that immediately trips again points to a short circuit or overload on a specific zone.
- Verify transformer output voltage
With a multimeter on the output terminals, check whether the transformer is producing any voltage. No voltage output confirms transformer failure. Correct voltage output narrows the failure to the cable, connections, or fixture.
- Check timer and photocell settings
Manually override the timer to force the system on. If lights come on under manual override but not on the automatic schedule, the photocell is blocking the circuit (often because it is pointed at an artificial light source or is failing) or the timer clock reset after a power outage.
- Trace the cable for breaks
If power is reaching the output terminals but specific zones are dark, probe voltage at splice points along the run to find where the circuit breaks. A sharp drop to zero between two splice points indicates a severed or severely corroded section of cable.
In Central Florida, the most common cause of an entire landscape lighting system going dark is a GFCI outlet trip, often triggered by moisture intrusion into the transformer enclosure or a ground fault caused by a damaged cable buried in saturated soil during heavy rain. If your system went dark overnight or during a storm, start at the GFCI outlet before opening the transformer. Many service calls in Central Florida are resolved with a single GFCI reset.

Why did all my landscape lights stop working at once?
Whole-system failure almost always points to a power supply issue: a tripped GFCI outlet, a tripped internal transformer breaker, or a dead transformer. Check power at the outlet first, then at the transformer output terminals. If you have power at the outlet but no output from the transformer, the transformer has failed.
Why is only one zone of my landscape lighting not working?
Zone-specific failure points to a problem downstream of the transformer: a severed cable, a completely corroded splice that has lost continuity, or a failed LED driver in the first fixture on the run that is breaking the circuit for all fixtures after it. Probing voltage at splice points along the run isolates the break.
My landscape lights stopped working after lawn aeration — what happened?
Lawn aeration cores typically penetrate 2–3 inches into the soil. Landscape lighting cable buried at less than 6 inches is vulnerable. A core can sever or pinch a cable, breaking the circuit for everything past that point. The repair is cable splicing at the break point using waterproof connectors, or pulling new cable if multiple breaks occurred.
