How we calculate lumen requirements
- Measure throw distance per position
Fixture lumen ratings are measured at the source. What matters for planning is the illuminance at the target surface — which falls with the square of distance. A fixture 10 feet from its target delivers one quarter the illuminance it would at 5 feet. We measure each throw distance and calculate accordingly.
- Assess ambient light environment
A 300-lumen uplight that reads beautifully on an acre lot in a dark rural environment will read as underwhelming on a suburban lot with street lighting, neighboring home illumination, and ambient sky glow. We assess ambient conditions for each property and adjust minimum lumen thresholds accordingly.
- Spec and verify with test fixtures
For primary focal points and high-value feature lighting, we verify lumen selections with test fixtures during the evening walkthrough where possible. This catches miscalculations before fixtures are ordered and eliminates the most expensive corrections.
Most Central Florida suburbs have moderate ambient light levels from street lighting and neighboring homes. This typically means primary focal point fixtures need a minimum of 400–600 lumens at the target surface to compete with ambient and read as the visual anchor they're designed to be. Under-specified fixtures — common when homeowners buy consumer-grade landscape kits — deliver 100–200 lumens at throw distance and simply disappear into the ambient environment. How many lumens does a landscape uplight need?
It depends on throw distance, target surface, and ambient light level. A general starting point for primary focal point uplights at 8–12 feet is 200–400 lumens at the fixture. At 20–25 feet, you need 600–900+ lumens to achieve equivalent perceived brightness. These are rough ranges — actual requirements vary significantly by ambient light environment and surface reflectivity.
Can I add brightness after installation?
If your fixtures have dimmable drivers, you can adjust within the fixture's output range. If your transformer has headroom, you can add fixtures. If you need more output from a fixed-driver fixture, replacement is the only option. We spec systems with transformer headroom and flag positions where future brightness adjustment might be desired.
Is brighter always better for landscape lighting?
No. Over-lit landscapes look harsh and institutional.
