Landscape Lights On During Daytime

Common causes of landscape lights running during the day

  • Failed photocell stuck in the closed (on) position, overriding the timer
  • Photocell pointed at or obstructed by a light source that prevents it from detecting daylight
  • Timer clock reset after a power outage with AM/PM set incorrectly
  • Timer programmed to run 24 hours — common after an owner manually overrides and forgets to restore
  • Photocell sensitivity threshold set too high, requiring full noon-level brightness before switching off

How to diagnose daytime-on landscape lighting

  1. Check the timer program

    Access the transformer timer and verify the on/off schedule. Check whether the clock shows the correct time and AM/PM. A power outage that lasted more than the transformer’s clock battery backup will reset the clock, and many homeowners inadvertently set AM/PM backwards when reprogramming.

  2. Cover the photocell and observe behavior

    Block the photocell from all light with a piece of opaque tape or cloth. If the lights were on during the day and they turn off when the photocell is covered, the photocell is functioning but receiving a false signal — typically from a nearby lamp, reflective surface, or the transformer’s own enclosure reflecting morning sun. Relocating or shading the photocell usually solves this.

  3. Test the photocell in isolation

    Disconnect the photocell and bypass it. If the timer now controls the system correctly (off during the day, on at programmed dusk time), the photocell itself has failed and needs replacement. Photocells are inexpensive components and typically plug directly into the transformer housing.

  4. Verify photocell orientation

    The photocell sensor should point toward the open sky, away from any artificial light source and away from direct southern sun exposure. If it is shaded by vegetation or pointed at a wall that reflects artificial light back at it, it will misread ambient light levels.

Central Florida note

In Central Florida, photocell positioning is complicated by the fact that many homes have exterior lights on timers that come on at dusk — the same moment the landscape lighting photocell is trying to sense darkness. A photocell mounted near a front-porch light or garage light that activates at dusk can be fooled into thinking it is still daytime, keeping the landscape system off during early evening. Conversely, a photocell aimed at an east-facing exterior surface can receive enough reflected morning sun to stay switched off past 9 or 10 AM. Both problems are solved by repositioning the photocell to a location with an unobstructed view of the open sky.

Frequently asked questions

How long do landscape lighting photocells last?
Most quality photocells last 5–10 years under normal conditions. In Central Florida’s UV environment, exterior-mounted photocells are exposed to intense sun year-round and may degrade faster than in northern climates. A photocell that is more than 7 years old and showing erratic behavior should be replaced as a standard maintenance item rather than diagnosed further.
Does running landscape lights during the day cause any damage?
Running LED landscape fixtures continuously shortens driver life. LED drivers are rated for a specific number of operating hours — typically 30,000–50,000 hours. A system that runs 18 hours per day instead of 8 hours will reach end of driver life in roughly half the expected time. Transformers also accumulate heat stress from continuous operation, which accelerates capacitor degradation in the secondary circuitry.
