When a transformer upgrade is the right solution

What transformer upgrade involves

  1. Load audit of current system

    We calculate total wattage across all connected fixtures and map which circuit runs connect to which taps. This determines minimum replacement capacity and how many taps are needed on the new unit to serve existing runs without exceeding 80% load on any individual tap.

  2. Transformer selection and sizing

    Replacement transformers are selected for actual load plus 25–30% headroom for future expansion. Multi-tap units allow each cable run to be connected to a tap voltage matched to its run length — longer runs use higher-voltage taps to compensate for resistance loss and deliver correct voltage at the fixtures.

  3. Installation and reconnection

    The old unit is removed and the new transformer is mounted to the same surface or a new mounting location if the original position is problematic. All cable runs are reconnected to appropriate taps and voltage is verified at representative fixtures throughout the system.

  4. Timer and photocell programming

    The new transformer's timer is programmed to the correct schedule and the photocell is verified functional and aimed correctly. Where available, astronomical timer settings are configured so the system adjusts automatically to seasonal sunrise and sunset changes without manual reprogramming.

Central Florida note

In Central Florida, transformer placement is affected by the fact that most residential landscape lighting transformers mount to an exterior wall and are exposed to direct sun for much of the day. West-facing locations absorb significant afternoon heat, which causes transformers running near rated capacity to thermal-cycle — producing flickering and shortened component life. When upgrading a transformer, we evaluate mounting location and recommend shaded or north-facing positions where possible to extend service life in Florida's heat.

Common questions

How large a transformer do I need for a typical residential landscape lighting system?

A 20–30 fixture LED system running 5W per fixture draws 100–150W. A 150W transformer at 80% capacity limit handles this comfortably. With halogen fixtures at 20W each, the same 20–30 fixture count draws 400–600W and requires a 600W or larger transformer. Most Central Florida residential properties with LED systems run well on 150–300W units; halogen systems typically need 300–600W.

Can I keep my existing cable runs when I upgrade the transformer?

Yes. Cable runs connect to the transformer at terminal blocks and can be transferred to the new unit. The only exception is if cable runs need to be reorganized across different taps to correct voltage, which may require adding new splice connections where runs are split between taps.
