Common causes of flickering and dim landscape lights
- Voltage drop from undersized wire gauge or runs that are too long for the circuit
- Corroded or loose splice connections increasing resistance in the circuit
- Overloaded transformer tap carrying more wattage than it was configured for
- Intermittent ground fault tripping the circuit breaker under load
- Transformer aging and losing consistent output voltage
How to diagnose flickering or dim landscape lighting
- Measure voltage at the transformer output
Check each output tap with a multimeter while the system is running. Output should be within 0.3V of the rated tap voltage. A reading significantly below rated output points to a failing transformer or overloaded secondary.
- Measure voltage at the last fixture on each circuit
Probe the fixture leads at the farthest point on each run. Readings below 10.8V confirm voltage drop. Compare across circuits to see which runs are most affected.
- Inspect splice connections
Open each connector along the affected run. Green or white oxidation on wire ends, loose crimp points, or cracked insulation all add resistance that compounds voltage drop and causes flickering under varying load conditions.
- Calculate circuit wattage and tap loading
Total the wattage on the affected circuit and compare against the transformer tap rating. If the circuit is at or above the rated capacity, thermal expansion during warm weather can cause intermittent breaker trips that appear as flickering.
In Central Florida, flickering and dimming symptoms often worsen between May and September when ambient temperatures peak. Transformer enclosures exposed to afternoon sun on west-facing walls can reach internal temperatures high enough to trigger thermal protection, causing the system to cycle off and on. Circuits that are marginal at 75°F ambient may flicker consistently above 90°F. If your flickering is seasonal and worst in the late afternoon, heat-related transformer stress is a likely contributor.
What these symptoms mean for your system
Are dim landscape lights a sign of a failing transformer?
Dim lights across the entire system — not just on long runs — can indicate a transformer that is losing output voltage. However, dim lights only at the far ends of runs more often indicate voltage drop from wire resistance. Measuring at the transformer output terminals distinguishes the two.
Why do landscape lights flicker when they are first turned on?
Brief flickering at startup is sometimes normal as the transformer reaches operating temperature and LED drivers initialize. Flickering that continues beyond 30–60 seconds, or that recurs throughout the evening, indicates a real electrical problem rather than a startup artifact.
Can corroded splice connections cause flickering?
Yes. Corroded wire-to-wire connections introduce variable resistance into the circuit. As the connection heats under load and cools at lower load, resistance changes and voltage at the fixture fluctuates — which appears as flickering. Gel-filled waterproof splice connectors prevent corrosion and are the correct repair for corroded connections in landscape lighting.
