Broken Landscape Lighting Fixture Signs
Landscape lighting fixtures take physical abuse from lawn equipment, irrigation, foot traffic, and Florida’s weather cycles. Recognizing the signs of a broken fixture early prevents water intrusion from damaging wiring and avoids circuit faults that affect the entire zone.

Signs of broken landscape lighting fixtures
- Cracked or missing lens covers exposing the LED module to weather
- Fixture housing filled with water or showing visible moisture condensation on the lens
- Bent or snapped stake preventing proper fixture angle and aim
- Dead LED module — fixture receives voltage but produces no light
- Corrosion on fixture body or terminals visible from the exterior
How to assess a broken fixture
- Check for voltage at the fixture leads
Before assuming the fixture is dead, confirm it is receiving power. A multimeter probe at the connection point confirms whether the issue is the fixture or the wiring. No voltage at the fixture leads points upstream to a cable or splice problem.
- Inspect for water intrusion
Open or remove the fixture and check for standing water, corrosion on the LED board, or moisture damage to the driver. Water-damaged LED modules always require full fixture replacement — there is no reliable repair for a waterlogged driver board.
- Evaluate physical damage extent
A bent stake with an intact housing and functional LED can be repaired by replacing the stake. A cracked housing with a dry LED may be repairable with a lens replacement. A broken housing that has allowed water in for an unknown period requires full replacement.
- Check that the replacement matches the circuit load
When replacing a fixture, confirm the replacement wattage matches or is close to the original. Swapping a 5W fixture for a 12W fixture on a circuit that is already near its tap capacity can overload the circuit.
In Central Florida, the most common causes of broken fixtures are lawn mower and string trimmer strikes, irrigation rotor impacts, and foot traffic in beds during landscape maintenance. Inground uplights are particularly vulnerable to riding mower wheel damage in areas where the turf surrounds the fixture. Fixtures within 18 inches of a mow edge should be specified in cast brass or stainless steel housings, not aluminum or plastic, to survive repeated near-misses from equipment.
