What a lighting layout plan includes

  • Scaled property diagram with fixture positions dimensioned from fixed reference points
  • Fixture schedule — model, beam angle, wattage, and color temperature per position
  • Circuit assignment with load calculation per circuit and per transformer tap
  • Wire run routing — planned paths from transformer to fixture groups avoiding obstacles
  • Transformer location and tap configuration to deliver voltage within range at each fixture
  • Phase 1 / Phase 2 notation for projects being installed in stages

How we develop the layout plan

  1. Site measurement and property sketch

    We measure the property and sketch fixture positions relative to identifiable fixed points — the house foundation, driveway edge, pool coping, tree trunk. This gives installers reference points that survive site conditions like fresh mulch or low-light installation timing.

  2. Circuit and load calculation

    Every circuit is load-calculated to ensure fixture wattages stay within safe operating range for the transformer tap. Circuits that approach capacity are flagged for future expansion headroom. Voltage drop is calculated for each run to confirm fixtures at the end of long runs receive adequate voltage.

  3. Delivery and installer briefing

    The completed layout plan is delivered in a format usable in the field — scaled diagram plus fixture schedule on a single document. For larger projects, Jorge walks the installation crew through the plan to resolve any on-site questions before the first shovel goes in the ground.

Central Florida considerations

Central Florida's combination of sandy soils and irrigation systems affects wire routing decisions in ways that northern installation guides don't address. Irrigation zones need to be mapped so wire trenches don't sever drip lines or impact spray heads. Sandy soil means burial depth matters — shallow-buried wire in Seminole County's sandy substrate can surface after heavy rain. Our layout plans include soil notes and irrigation zone callouts so these conflicts are resolved before installation rather than discovered during it.

Common questions

Do I need a layout plan if I'm only doing a small installation?

For very simple installations — two or three fixtures on a single circuit — a full scaled layout plan may be more than you need. A fixture spec and circuit list is typically sufficient. For anything with multiple circuits, phased installation, or long wire runs, a layout plan pays for itself by avoiding load problems and positioning errors that require expensive corrections after cable is buried.

Can I use your layout plan with a different installer?

Yes. The layout plan is yours. If you want to have it executed by another contractor, that's your right. We design systems intended to be installed correctly regardless of who holds the tools.

How do you handle changes during installation?

Field conditions sometimes require adjustments — a root system blocks a planned wire run, or a fixture position needs to shift two feet to avoid a sprinkler head. When Jorge is on-site for installation, these are resolved in real time. When working from a plan, we include a change-documentation note so any field deviations are captured and the as-built layout reflects what was actually installed.
