How It Works

  1. Architectural review — we look at wall height, material (stucco, CBS block, brick, wood), and the existing or planned lighting nearby. Mounting surface affects fixture selection and cable routing significantly.
  2. Fixture and angle selection — wall grazing requires a very specific angle to bring out texture rather than just washing a surface flat. We choose fixtures and positions that work with your specific wall material.
  3. Night verification — wall-mounted fixtures have a complex relationship with how they interact with adjacent landscape lighting. We verify all directions during the night aiming session.

Florida's stucco and CBS block construction creates different mounting challenges than wood-framed walls. We use appropriate masonry anchors and sealed junction boxes rated for exterior wet locations. Florida's humidity also accelerates corrosion on sub-standard hardware — all mounting hardware we use is stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized. UV-rated caulk around all penetrations is standard practice on every install.

Can you mount sconces on stucco?
Yes. Stucco over CBS block is the most common wall type we work with in Central Florida. We use masonry anchors rated for the substrate, create a proper weatherproof penetration for cable entry, and seal with UV-stable exterior caulk. The finished look is clean and professionally mounted.
What is wall grazing and how does it work?
Wall grazing is a technique where a fixture is mounted very close to a wall surface — typically 6–12 inches away — and aimed parallel to it. This creates shadows that highlight texture: stone joints, brick courses, rough stucco, or wood grain. A flat, smooth wall grazes poorly; a textured wall can be transformed by it.
Can wall sconces be connected to my existing landscape lighting transformer?
In most cases yes, if the transformer has available capacity. We calculate the wattage load of the new fixtures and verify it against your transformer's remaining headroom before connecting. If capacity is tight, we add a second transformer or upgrade the existing unit.
What style of wall fixture works best for modern homes?
Sleek, low-profile directional sconces in matte black or dark bronze finishes work well for modern architecture. For transitional or Mediterranean styles, cast brass or antique-finish fixtures with more visible body are often a better match. We bring fixture samples to the site visit for comparison.
Do wall sconces need to be aimed like ground fixtures?
Yes — most wall sconces have some degree of aim adjustment, and getting it right matters. A sconce aimed too low creates a harsh hot spot. Too high spills light where it is not useful. We set each sconce after dark for the correct beam placement and output level.
Is masonry drilling included in the price?
Yes. Masonry drilling, anchor installation, cable routing through the wall, and weatherproof junction box installation are all included in the pricing for wall sconce installs. We leave the mounting surface clean and properly sealed.
