Signs of glare and hot-spot problems

  • A bare bulb or LED module is visible from normal seating height rather than the light it produces
  • A distinct bright circle or "hot spot" appears on a wall, deck surface, or table rather than an even wash
  • Photos taken at the table show a blown-out bright patch and dark surroundings in the same frame
  • Guests instinctively shift their chairs or shield their eyes when facing a particular direction

What causes glare and hot spots

  1. Unshielded fixture at or near eye level

    Overhead or wall-mounted fixtures installed at seated eye height without a shield, louver, or recessed housing put the bare light source directly in the line of sight. The fix is almost always a shielded or recessed fixture, not a dimmer.

  2. Beam angle too narrow for the distance

    A narrow spot-beam fixture aimed at a nearby wall or deck surface concentrates all its output into a small hot circle. Widening the beam angle or moving the fixture farther from the surface spreads that same output over a larger area for a softer, more even look.

  3. Fixture wattage mismatched to its distance from the viewer

    A fixture bright enough to properly illuminate a far wall may be uncomfortably glary when it happens to also sit within a few feet of a seating area. Zoning fixtures by distance from where people actually sit resolves this without sacrificing the wall's illumination.

  4. No diffusion or frosted lens on a direct-view fixture

    Fixtures intended to be visible, like pendant or globe fixtures over a dining table, need a frosted or diffusing lens. A clear-lens fixture at that same location will glare regardless of wattage.

Screen enclosures amplify glare in a specific way: light aimed toward the screen mesh at a shallow angle can create a visible glowing patch on the screen itself, which is distracting from seating positions facing that direction. When designing lighting inside a lanai or pool cage, fixture angle relative to the screen surface matters as much as fixture placement relative to the seating.

Frequently asked questions

Can glare be fixed by just dimming the light?
Sometimes partially, but dimming a poorly shielded fixture usually just produces a dimmer version of the same glare rather than eliminating it. The more reliable fix is addressing the shielding, beam angle, or fixture position directly.
Do string lights cause glare?
Frosted or globe-style string lights rarely cause meaningful glare because the bulb itself is diffused. Clear, unfrosted bulb string lights hung at low height directly over a seating area can create noticeable glare, which is one reason we default to frosted or amber-tone globes for dining zones.
