Diagnosing flickering landscape lights

  1. Determine if flickering is isolated or system-wide

    A single flickering fixture points to that fixture’s driver or its direct splice connection. Multiple fixtures on the same circuit flickering together points to a circuit-level issue — a bad splice, overloaded tap, or transformer problem upstream of all of them.

  2. Inspect splice connections along the affected circuit

    Open each connector on the affected run and look for green or white oxidation on wire ends, looseness in the crimp, or cracked insulation. Replace all corroded connectors with new gel-filled waterproof connectors and retest.

  3. Swap the fixture to test the driver

    If splice connections are clean and voltage is stable at the fixture leads, the LED driver is the likely cause. Replace the fixture with a known-good unit and observe whether flickering resolves. If it does, the original fixture’s driver has failed.

  4. Measure transformer load and output voltage

    Calculate total wattage on the transformer and check output voltage at the terminals. A transformer running above 80% of rated capacity during warm weather will thermal-cycle, producing voltage fluctuations that appear as system-wide flickering.

In Central Florida, flickering that appears or worsens during summer months is frequently caused by transformer thermal stress rather than a wiring fault. West-facing transformer enclosures absorb significant afternoon heat, and units already running near capacity begin thermal cycling as internal temperatures rise. If your flickering is seasonal and occurs primarily in the evening after hot days, check transformer load and consider relocating the enclosure to a shaded location or upgrading to a higher-capacity unit.

Can flickering landscape lights damage the fixtures?
Yes. Repeated voltage fluctuations from a corroded splice or thermally cycling transformer accelerate LED driver failure. Drivers are designed to operate within a stable voltage window; repeated excursions outside that window shorten driver life. A circuit that has been flickering for months may need fixture replacements in addition to the underlying electrical repair.
Do landscape lights always flicker before they fail completely?
Not always. Some LED drivers fail abruptly without prior flickering. Others flicker for months before failing. Corrosion-caused flickering almost always gets progressively worse over time as the corroded connection degrades further. A circuit that flickered occasionally last season and flickers regularly this season has a worsening problem that should be diagnosed and repaired before the next failure.
