How It Works

  1. Safety mapping — we walk every grade change and transition point on the property after dark to identify where lighting is needed for safe navigation.
  2. Fixture placement — recessed riser lighting requires precise routing so cable is protected from foot traffic and the fixture housing sits flush. We template and cut precisely.
  3. Beam direction verification — step lights should illuminate the tread below them, not the face of a person walking up. We aim and verify every fixture at dusk.

Does step lighting need to be on a separate zone?
Not always, but it is often worth it. Step lighting is primarily a safety feature and should remain on even when other accent zones are dimmed or off. A dedicated zone gives you that flexibility without affecting the rest of your lighting system.
How bright should step lights be?
Bright enough to clearly define the tread edge, but not so bright that they create glare or uplight onto the faces of people descending. We typically run step lights at 30–50% of their rated output and verify at night. The goal is safe, not stadium-lit.
Can you add riser lights to existing concrete steps?
Yes. We core-drill or cut recesses into existing concrete or masonry risers and route cable through conduit embedded in the structure. It is more labor-intensive than new construction but very achievable on most existing hardscape.
What is the best fixture type for retaining wall lighting?
Surface-mount step lights or recessed brick lights work well for most retaining wall applications. The choice depends on wall thickness, material, and whether you want a flush look or a slightly projecting fixture profile. We assess and recommend during the site visit.
Will step lighting survive Florida rain?
Yes — all step and riser fixtures we specify are wet-location rated. We also install drip protection at junction boxes and route conduit with drainage loops to prevent water pooling at connection points.
Can step lights be smart-controlled?
Yes. Step lighting zones can be integrated into smart transformer systems with app control, timer scheduling, and scene presets. A common setup is a safety-minimum brightness from dusk to dawn with an option to dim further late at night.
