How we size and install your transformer

  1. Wattage load calculation

    We add the wattage of every fixture in the design, then size the transformer to 75–80% of its rated capacity at full load. This leaves headroom for future fixtures and prevents the thermal overload that shortens transformer life.

  2. Location selection and mounting

    Transformers must be mounted within 12 inches of a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet, at least 12 inches off the ground. We select locations that are hidden from street view, protected from irrigation spray, and accessible for seasonal adjustment.

  3. Multi-tap output configuration

    Most quality transformers offer multiple output taps (12V, 13V, 14V). We assign longer cable runs to higher-voltage taps to compensate for the voltage that drops across longer wire lengths, keeping every fixture in the 10.8–12V operating range.

  4. Timer, photocell, and smart control setup

    We program on/off times, configure the photocell for dusk-to-dawn or partial-night operation, and — for smart transformers — connect the app and confirm remote control is working before we leave.

We specify transformers with die-cast aluminum enclosures and rubber-gasketed doors rated for outdoor exposure in tropical climates. Mounting height matters here — transformers installed less than 12 inches off the ground in Florida's rainy season routinely flood during heavy storms. We also account for the fact that most Central Florida homes run irrigation six to seven days per week, meaning any transformer mounted within spray range of a rotor head will fail within 18 months regardless of its rated weather resistance.

What size transformer do I need for landscape lighting?

Add up the wattage of all your fixtures, then choose a transformer rated at 125–135% of that total. For example, 20 fixtures at 5 watts each equals 100 watts — a 150W transformer is the right fit. This leaves room for future fixtures and keeps the transformer from running at thermal capacity, which shortens its lifespan.

Where should a landscape lighting transformer be mounted?

Transformers should be mounted on a wall, post, or stake within 12 inches of a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet, at least 12 inches above grade, and out of the direct spray path of irrigation heads. In Florida, we also recommend positioning away from the west and southwest sides of the home to reduce afternoon heat load on the enclosure.

Can I plug a landscape lighting transformer into a regular outdoor outlet?

The outlet must be GFCI-protected — most modern outdoor outlets in Florida are, but older homes sometimes have unprotected exterior outlets. We verify GFCI protection before installation and coordinate with an electrician if a new outlet is needed. Running a landscape lighting transformer from a non-GFCI outlet is both a code violation and a safety issue.
