Every LED fixture has a color temperature rating measured in Kelvin (K). It's printed on the box, listed in spec sheets, and almost always explained poorly. Most homeowners pick a number without understanding what it will look like in their actual yard, under their actual trees, against their actual house. This guide fixes that.

What Kelvin means

Kelvin measures the color appearance of light on a scale from warm to cool. Lower numbers are warmer and more amber; higher numbers are cooler and more blue-white. The range relevant to residential landscape lighting runs from about 2400K to 4000K. Outside that range, you're either in candlelight territory or commercial parking lot territory.

  • 2700K: Warm white. The color of a classic incandescent bulb. Amber-gold quality.
  • 3000K: Neutral white. Slightly crisper than 2700K, still warm but without the amber cast.
  • 4000K: Cool white. Noticeably blue-white. Looks clinical in most residential settings.

Most professional landscape lighting designers work almost exclusively in the 2700K–3000K range. Anything above 3000K in a residential yard tends to look harsh, institutional, or unfinished.

How Florida's environment affects color perception

Central Florida's landscape palette is different from the Northeast or Pacific Northwest, and it changes how color temperature reads in practice. Florida yards are full of high-contrast colors: brilliant white or pale stucco facades, warm-toned limestone, vivid green palm fronds, dark mulch, terracotta. These surfaces interact with light temperature in specific ways.

Light stucco and white facades pick up the amber quality of 2700K beautifully, creating a warm, welcoming glow. At 3000K, the same wall looks brighter and slightly cooler but still appealing. At 4000K, white stucco starts to look overexposed and clinical, like a hospital exterior.

Limestone accents render best at 2700K. The warm tone enhances the natural cream and tan variations in the stone. Cooler temperatures flatten limestone and wash out its texture.

Palm fronds and tropical foliage are where 3000K sometimes outperforms 2700K. Florida's vivid green palms and tropical plantings can look slightly yellow-green under very warm 2700K light. A 3000K source renders that same foliage a crisper, more natural green.

Why most designers choose 2700K for residential

The default recommendation among experienced landscape lighting designers is 2700K for residential properties, and the reason is straightforward: it looks warm, inviting, and residential. It reads as intentional rather than functional. It flatters the materials most houses are built from. And critically, it matches the interior light that spills through windows, so the house reads as a cohesive whole after dark rather than a mix of inside-warm and outside-cool.

When 3000K is the better choice

Three situations favor 3000K over 2700K:

  1. Modern or contemporary architecture. Clean-lined homes with gray, white, or dark-toned exteriors often look better under the slightly crisper 3000K.
  2. Tropical planting-heavy landscapes. Lush tropical foliage can look better under 3000K, particularly for garden and moonlighting applications.
  3. Mixed lighting systems. If a property has existing outdoor fixtures at 3000K, matching the existing temperature is often the right call for system cohesion.

Practical advice for choosing

Ask your lighting designer to show you both temperatures on your actual property before committing. This is easy to do during a nighttime walkthrough: bring a 2700K and a 3000K test fixture and aim them at your facade or a featured tree. The difference is immediately apparent in person and almost impossible to accurately judge from product photos.

One rule that holds almost universally: avoid mixing 2700K and 4000K in the same field of view. The contrast is jarring and unfixable without replacing fixtures.
