Problem Signs

Frequent Landscape Lighting Bulb Burnout

If you are replacing landscape lighting bulbs every few months, the bulbs are not the problem — the operating conditions are. Halogen and incandescent landscape lamps fail rapidly under over-voltage, high ambient heat, and repeated thermal shock from outdoor temperature cycles. LED retrofit eliminates all three failure drivers.

Signs that frequent bulb burnout is a systemic problem

  • Halogen or incandescent bulbs burning out in under 6 months
  • Bulbs on the same circuit failing at roughly the same time
  • Blackening or browning at the tip of the halogen capsule before failure
  • Transformer output voltage reading above 12.5V at the fixture leads
  • Annual bulb replacement cost that exceeds the cost of LED retrofit fixtures

Why halogen landscape bulbs burn out frequently

  1. Over-voltage shortens filament life drastically

Halogen bulb life is extremely sensitive to operating voltage. A bulb rated for 12V running at 13V loses approximately 50% of its rated lifespan. At 14V, lifespan drops to roughly 25% of rated. Many landscape lighting transformers deliver 13–13.5V at close fixtures on short runs, which is the correct voltage for compensating drop on long runs but dramatically over-drives bulbs on short ones.

  2. Thermal cycling stresses the filament

Each time a halogen lamp heats to operating temperature and cools back to ambient, the filament undergoes thermal stress. In Florida’s outdoor environment, the temperature differential between a cool night and operating temperature is large, and systems that run every night accumulate filament fatigue faster than in climates with smaller temperature ranges.

  3. Fixture heat retention accelerates burnout

Enclosed halogen fixtures that trap heat around the lamp capsule run the filament at higher than design temperature even at correct voltage. This is particularly common with flush-mounted inground fixtures where the soil acts as an insulator around the housing.

  4. LED retrofit eliminates all three failure mechanisms

LED modules produce roughly 10% of the heat of an equivalent halogen lamp, are not voltage-sensitive in the same way (the driver regulates current regardless of voltage within the operating range), and have no filament to fatigue. A quality LED landscape fixture typically lasts 50,000 hours without replacement under the same conditions that burn through halogen bulbs in 500.

Central Florida note

Central Florida’s year-round warmth means landscape lighting systems run every night of the year without the winter shutdown that gives systems in colder climates an annual rest period. A system running 8 hours per night for 365 nights accumulates nearly 3,000 operating hours per year. At that rate, a halogen bulb rated for 2,000 hours at design voltage lasts less than a year under ideal conditions — and often far less when operating above design voltage. For Central Florida homeowners still running halogen fixtures, annual bulb replacement is effectively built into the maintenance cost of the system. LED retrofit eliminates that cost entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just replace my halogen bulbs with LED bulbs in the same fixture?
Sometimes, but not always. Some halogen landscape fixtures accept MR16 or other standard-base LED retrofit lamps that drop directly into the existing socket. Others have integrated drivers or proprietary connections that make retrofit lamp swapping impractical. The more important question is whether the existing fixture housing is designed to work with LED thermal management — LED lamps in enclosed halogen fixtures that trap heat may not achieve rated lifespan.
How much does LED retrofit save on energy costs?
LED landscape fixtures typically use 60–80% less electricity than equivalent halogen fixtures. A system with 30 halogen fixtures at 20W each runs at 600 watts. LED equivalents at 5W each run at 150 watts. At Florida’s average residential electricity rate, that difference compounds significantly over a full year of nightly operation — often $150–$300 per year in savings on a typical residential system.
