If your landscape lighting is more than six or seven years old, it's almost certainly running on halogen or incandescent lamps. When these systems start failing (burnt-out bulbs, flickering zones, dead fixtures), the question most Central Florida homeowners face isn't whether LED is better (it is). It's whether to retrofit the existing system to LED or replace it entirely. That decision isn't always straightforward, and the wrong call is expensive either way.
What landscape lighting LED retrofit actually means
Retrofitting means swapping the lamp inside your existing fixture housing from halogen to an LED equivalent. If the fixture socket accepts an LED MR16 or PAR36 replacement, the process is simple: pull the halogen lamp, insert the LED, done. You keep the fixture housings, the buried cable runs, and the transformer. Only the light source changes.
It sounds simple, and sometimes it is. But there are four factors that determine whether a retrofit is the right investment, or whether replacement is the smarter call.
Factor 1: Fixture material and condition
Florida's combination of UV radiation, humidity, and heat is unusually hard on fixture materials. Aluminum fixtures, common in systems installed before 2015, corrode, pit, and develop failing seals faster than brass or copper. If your fixtures show visible corrosion at the socket, cracked or degraded gaskets, or housings that have become brittle from UV exposure, an LED lamp won't solve those problems. A retrofitted socket in a deteriorating housing will fail within a year or two regardless of what lamp is in it.
Brass and solid copper fixtures age very differently. They develop a patina but the underlying material stays sound for decades. These are almost always worth retrofitting. Aluminum fixtures should be evaluated case by case. Plastic fixtures in Florida's climate should generally be replaced outright.
Factor 2: Transformer compatibility
LED lamps draw 75–85% less wattage than halogen equivalents. A halogen system with a 300-watt transformer running 20 fixtures might only draw 50–70 watts after a full LED swap. That's a dramatic reduction in your electric bill, but it can create a different problem. Some older transformer designs behave erratically when the load drops well below their minimum output rating: flickering, early LED driver failure, or inconsistent color temperature across the system.
If your transformer is more than 10 years old and uses a basic analog timer, a compatible new transformer often becomes part of the LED retrofit budget. That changes the economics. On older transformers, factor in replacement cost before deciding retrofit versus replace.
Factor 3: Cable and connector integrity
Low-voltage cable buried in Florida soil faces ongoing moisture exposure, UV at any exposed sections, and ground movement from irrigation activity and root growth. Wire-nut connectors, the twist-on plastic caps used in most landscape lighting installations before 2015, corrode at the contact point under Florida conditions, creating resistance in the circuit that causes voltage drop. Voltage drop makes LEDs dim, flicker, or fail prematurely.
If a pre-retrofit inspection reveals wire-nut connections throughout the system, replacing those connectors with waterproof crimp connectors is necessary for the LED retrofit to perform correctly. On older systems with widespread wire-nut connections, that connector replacement labor adds meaningful cost to the retrofit budget.
Factor 4: System size and layout relevance
Larger systems (25 or more fixtures) have more surface area for problems to exist, and a retrofit on a system this size often surfaces multiple individual issues (corroded sockets, bad connectors, misaligned aims from years of lawn activity) that each require time to address. On a 30-fixture system, the combined labor to properly retrofit can approach the cost of a fresh installation with new fixtures.
Smaller systems under 15 fixtures are almost always worth retrofitting if fixture materials are sound. The per-fixture labor cost is low enough that the retrofit math clearly wins over replacement.
Also consider whether the existing layout still matches your landscape. If significant planting changes, additions, or hardscape work have happened since the original installation, retrofitting a halogen system might preserve a fixture map that no longer serves the property well. Sometimes the right decision is a redesign, not a lamp swap.
What to expect from LED performance after retrofit
When the conditions are right, a landscape lighting LED retrofit delivers immediate, measurable improvements:
- Energy reduction: A 20-fixture halogen system running 5 hours per night draws roughly $55–$80 per month in Florida. The same system on LED draws $8–$15 per month.
- Color consistency: Halogen lamps shift warmer as they age and lose output. LED maintains consistent color temperature throughout its rated lifespan.
- Heat reduction: Halogen lamps run at 200–400°F at the lamp surface. LED equivalents run under 100°F, eliminating the scorched mulch and soil damage common around halogen fixtures in Florida's heat.
- Lamp lifespan: Halogen landscape lamps last 2,000–4,000 hours. Quality LED equivalents last 25,000–50,000 hours. Most Florida homeowners won't replace lamps again during their ownership of the property.
Clear signs you should replace rather than retrofit
- Aluminum or plastic fixture housings with visible degradation or corrosion at the socket
- A transformer older than 10–12 years not rated for low-load LED operation
- Widespread wire-nut connectors requiring wholesale replacement to support LED performance
- A cable layout that no longer serves the current landscape due to growth or renovations
- A system that has needed repeated repairs over two or more consecutive seasons
